Natural foods and tea to the weight loss rescue! A recent study found that capsaicin (the “hot” part of chili peppers), CH-19 sweet peppers (sweet peppers from Thailand), and green tea may increase satiety, decrease hunger and therefore decrease calorie intake in healthy young adults… and fewer calories over time leads to a smaller pant size. In particular, the researchers found that capsaicin and green tea reduced people’s craving for fatty, salty, hot, and bitter foods. So if potato chips and French fries are what call your name away from your dieting, chili peppers and green tea just might be your diet superhero.
Although this was just one study that included only 27 people between 20 and 32 years of age, other research has also indicated these foods and drinks can help weight loss. Another study suggested sweet peppers might reduce belly fat. Green tea also may help whittle the waist, but results have been inconclusive.
- Green Tea: Choose fresh brewed over bottled. Bottled tea has not been shown to have the same benefits as fresh. Make a liter and put it in your fridge overnight to have it iced! Add fresh mint for a refreshing after-dinner drink.
- Capsaicin: Hot chili peppers go great in a summer-friendly gazpacho soup, guacamole, or this Spicy Two-Bean Vegetarian Chili from Bon Appetit. They’re also loaded with antioxidants, so spice up your food to boost not only your weight loss, but also your overall health!
- CH-19: Sweet peppers can go in just about anything. Add them to salad or soup; slice and dip them in hummus for a healthy snack. Sauté them with some skinless chicken for dinner.
Next time you’re at the grocery store, don’t forget to add these to your cart.
