Kim Kardashian has been diagnosed with psoriasis. The disease, which is fairly common, has been defined by the National Institutes of Health as “a common skin condition that causes skin redness and irritation. Most people with psoriasis have thick, red skin with flaky, silver-white patches called scales.”  While Miss Kardashian might feel alone as a result of her diagnosis, there are plenty of other celebrities who are in her same boat.

  • Art Garfunkle: Popular musician form the ’70s actually talked openly about his psoriasis on his website. He even said “I have psoriasis and I’ve been told that if you float in that salty, buoyant water, it’s very good for the skin. I found it not so much therapeutic as beautiful.”
  • LeAnn Rimes: Another musician who talked in an interview about psoriasis saying “Not only does that take a physical toll on your body, but it takes an emotional toll.”
  • John Updike: One of the best American contemporary writers talks about his battles with psoriasis extensively in his novel Self Consciousness, in the chapter At War With My Skin.

So if you’ve been diagnosed, you’re not in bad company. But be aware that psoriasis has been known to increase risk of depression so get familiar with what causes your flare-ups such as alcohol, stress, too much sun or certain medications.

    First:P I have Psoriatic Arthritis which is chronic arthritis pain caused by Psoriasis. It sucks. Nobody believes me about how painful it is. It feels like my hands have been beaten with hammers all the time. FML.

    I’ve had psoriasis since my early teens (I’m now 65) which flares so badly at times that my skin cracks & bleeds. I have found that soaking in a very hot tub with Dead Sea Salt dissolved in it. I have a jetted tub so I get the extra bebefit of the circulating water. It is VERY manageable with this treatment.

    @JoshuaElinoff

    I BELIEVE YOU! I also have Psoriatic Arthritis. Because, I look normal– people don’t understand the pain. It took MONTHS before I got a doctor to say what I had– at that point my psoriasis and the joint pain were so bad, I was unable to function. If you have symtoms of psoriasis and joint pain – get to a rheumatoligist. There is relief!

    Who really cares if Kim Kardashian has psoriasis! My husband has had a severe case his entire life and it has transititioned into Psoriatic arthritis as he has gotten older. Nothing completely supresses it, although Raptiva did a great job, but he had to switch to emberel, good for the arthritis portion, not so good for the skin .

  5. Janju says:

    Try going gluten-free. That’s what cured my psoriasis.

  6. bendereine says:

    I’ve had psoriatic arthritis since I was thirteen. I don’t really care that Kim Kardashian has psoriasis; it’s embarassing enough without having the disease in the public eye.

  7. bendereine says:

    @JoshuaElinoff I’m the same. I’ve had it since I was thirteen. I’ve been on a variety of medications, most recently methotrexate, until I begged to be taken off of it because I didn’t feel a benefit and I had horrible side effects.

    I have only had psoratic arthritis for about 5 years– I really reccommend that everyone that even suspects that they may have this autoimmune disease, get to a rheumatoligist that treats psoratic arthritis. I have been on many meds- NEVER thought that I could give myself a shot- and it seems like you need to change once in a while to keep your body on it’s toes! Am on Humera right now– It is working pretty well for my skin but my arthritis is giving me fits! Time to change…..

    One of my friends has psoriasis all over his body including his scalp. Homeopathy, healthy lifestyle and yoga is helping him. He is not the kind of person that gets stressed out easily. I guess for him it is in the genes. One of the other remedies that I recently came across on an article by borzack is Skin Dr…

    Wonders how does Kim Kardashian deal with her psoriasis? Well, she probably has all the money in the world to find treatments most people can never affords and she’s making a lot of news with it.

    We’re talking SUICIDE here. Having Psoriasis is such a nightmare, it feels like you have millions of bugs, insects or creatures crawling on you and making you itch to the point where you need to scratch til you bleed. The Lord help Psoriatrics, as it’s such a curse, that one wonders what might happen in a person life is not haunted by the itching, scaling, scratching, and bleeding from the lesions. Mine started when 15, while working at a ice cream parlor, so one wonders if Dairy isn’t a trigger. I may try to go GLUTEN FREE< although I’m not sure exactly what that entails, but to be free from this curse, would be a G-dsend…Thanks all for your posts.
